We offer tuning, pitch raise, string replacement, minor and major repairs and evaluation.
How often should my piano be tuned?
Most manufacterers say four times a year until the strings are stretched and settled. Twice a year after that is ideal, to keep up with seasonal changes. Many people have it done once a year. If it is more than a year, often it will need a pitch raise and a tuning, because it goes flat over time.
What is a pitch raise?
Under constant tension, the strings eventually stretch, and need to be "re-stretched". The strings do not stretch the same causing the piano to sound very badly. To do a pitch raise, the strings have to be tuned twice, once, very quickly, (not accurately), and then second, a fine tuning. A pitch raise will cost an additional half the normal tuning.
Why do seasonal changes matter?
The soundboard is "crowned". It is made to bow toward the strings. The strings push against it. As humidity changes, the soundboard changes. Again, not the same all the way across the piano, so it sounds bad. There is a humidity control system that really helps with this and other humidity problems. We can install a Damp Chaser humidity system to protect your piano.
How should I clean my piano?
Your piano should be cleaned with a soft clean lintless cloth, slightly damp, then with a dry cloth. Do not use furniture polish with silicone. There are cleaners and polishes available for pianos. Be sure to ask your technician.
To clean the keys, use the same method. If you have real ivory, do not get them wet! If an ivory comes loose, save it anc call your piano technician to reattach it.
To clean the inside, have your technician vacuum when he comes to tune it.
What is regulation?
Regulation is getting the piano to work the best it can, giving the pianist the greatest control possible of volume and tone. The many parts, felt and wood, compress and wear with use, and must be adjusted to compensate. This may sound simple, excet there are 88 keys to adjust. The felts wear gradually so you may not notice at first. Ask your piano technician if your piano needs to be regulated.
Where can I get a good used piano?
Local papers often have an add "Free piano - you haul." I like old uprights, but they are old, and the work they need, can exceed the value of the piano. I will be glad to do the work for you, but I would rather you knoew what to look for before you buy a piano. I can get you several books, depending on how much detail you want.
Why do the keys stick?
There are a number of problems that can make a key not work. Does the key stay down? Does the one beside it go down with it? Does the key go up and down, but no sound? Is the problem worse in the spring and summer? It could be dirt, worn or broken parts or keys swelled with humidity. A Dampp Chase Humidity system can help with humidity.
